Protect everything that must stay
Remove documents, photographs, jewellery, medication, keys and items promised to relatives before general sorting begins. Check pockets, drawers, loft boxes and the backs of cupboards.
Keep retained items in one locked room or vehicle and label undecided pieces. If several family members are involved, nominate one person to approve the final collection pile.
Identify reuse before waste
Clean, working household items may be suitable for reuse. Upholstered furniture normally needs an intact fire-safety label, and acceptance depends on condition and available space, so arrange donations early.
Separate electricals, metal, wood and ordinary household contents where practical. Keep paint, chemicals, gas bottles, asbestos, clinical waste and unidentified liquids apart and mention them before booking.
Show every part of the job
Photograph each room as well as the loft, garage, shed and garden. Include the stairs, entrance and walking route to the van. Complete photos allow a better volume estimate and reduce the risk of needing another trip.
For single bulky items, photograph both the item and exit route. Empty and defrost fridges and freezers, and secure loose furniture parts.
Use a registered waste carrier
Ask who is carrying the waste and keep their details. Handing household waste to an unregistered collector can leave you responsible if it is fly-tipped. Eddy Leasing Limited holds upper-tier Environment Agency registration CBDU445737.
